What a fabulous day we had at Forest School, The Year 2 children got to dig a mud pit, slide down a mud slide, play in the mud kitchen, walk on the ropes and play on the swings. They then all got to sit around the fire and enjoy a hot chocolate and a nice biscuit.
We had a lovely day finding out about China and taking part in lots of fun activities related to the Chinese New Year.
Everyone had a wonderful day dressing up as a book character and sharing their favourite book with the class.
We started to look at time and things we could do in 1 second, 1 minute and 1 hour. We found that in 1 second we could do things like clap, blink, jump, hop and wave. In 1 minute we could run around the playground a few times and build something simple using the construction equipment but in 1 hour we could do lots of things such as eat lunch and have playtime or listen to a story write about it.
We designed an arctic shelter.
We had a wonderful time at Stafford High House learning about the Tudor Times and The Great Fire of London. Children found out how they lived, what they wore, how the fire was eventually stopped and how they build their homes.
In music we have been finding out about beat and rhythm. We have taken turns to play the beat in a song and then the rhythm. We sang a rhyming song about potatoes and went on to recreate our own verses about potatoes.
We then started to create our own musical instruments and so far have made shakers and flutes. We will soon be using our instruments to play the beat and rhythm to our potato song. A couple of our favourite verses are "Mashed and mushed and cooked in a rush" and "Mash with cheese, let's have some greens".
We used strips of crepe paper and tried different ways to connect them to strengthen the paper and make a rope without the use of any tapes. Each group tested the strength of their ropes to see which held the most weight and was the indeed the strongest rope. We found that those that twisted their papers together were stronger than those just tied together.
This half term our theme was 'Castles' we had a fabulous time visiting Stafford Castle.
We have been finding out about The Great Fire of London. In Design and Technology the children enjoyed building Tudor houses.
We worked in small groups to order the events as they occurred in The Great Fire of London and created a timeline.
In Music we learned the song London's Burning and chose instruments that would be good to represent different elements of the song, we had a go at singing in rounds.
We have been finding out about our bodies and what we need to keep healthy. We learned the song head, shoulders, knees and toes and went on to label different parts of our bodies.
We looked at how we can keep our bodies fit and healthy. We enjoyed exercising in the playground and discovering what happens to our heart rate when we exercise.
Class 2 enjoyed the Puppet Show 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon'. The theatre company 'Fetch' used Bunraku puppetry which is a Japanese traditional puppet theatre in which half-life-sized dolls act out a chanted dramatic narrative. The show had no words and the children engaged with the puppets to let their imagination show them the story being told. It really was enchanting. The children had many questions to ask following the show.
